"Going Grey" 8" x 10"
I have been working on adding more greys into my paintings. I have four tube greys that I put on my palette prior to star, mostly to remind myself to use them. Portland grey light, medium and deep, plus Holbeins "Grey of Greys". The first three are colors that Kevin Macpearson uses frequently and the Grey of Greys is a color that I picked up from a Kaye Franklin workshop earlier this year. I try to subtly bend these shades warmer and cooler. The more grey I add, the brighter my main color will appear.
Just stumbled onto your blog and have an interest in doing more plein air so will enjoy following your posts. Interesting to read about the greys you are using, thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteThanks Julie. I painted this scene twice. I liked the first one, but gave it away in the OPS Christmas gift exchange, so I painted it again. It turned out even better.

One of these days I want to try painting something over and over, simplifying it every time and see how it ends up.
Wonderful painting! I love the free quick strokes and how lively the color and feel---you make going grey feel like a good thing! I, too, am noticing that almost every color in a painting is some form of gray.
